Nick Boles gets quizzed by Grantham College students
Students on the Routes to Employability Course played host to Nick Boles, Member of Parliament for Grantham & Stamford on 26 January. The session originated from a letter written by two students, Lia Davey and Rebecca Lacey to the MP on lowering the voting age to 16. They presented him with a petition signed by over 100 students and staff at the college supporting a lowering of the voting age. He promised to send it on to the Prime Minister for her consideration. While there are no Government plans to introduce a change in the voting age he told the students that if a law was proposed to do so he would vote for it.
The session continued with the students hearing about his life as a Member of Parliament and by asking him a range of questions they had prepared on the local Accident & Emergency service in Grantham and the wider NHS, affordable housing, homelessness, public transport fares, the job of an MP and his views on the future for today’s post 16 generation.
Their lecturer, Robert Moreland was delighted that the students’ interest in the voting age had resulted in them being able to meet and discuss this and other issues of interest to them with their local Member of Parliament. They now await a reply from the Government to the petition.
