Grantham College hosts Boccia Tournament with local college

Students from the Learning Development Centre welcomed students from Stamford College as they competed in a Boccia Tournament last week.

Boccia is a disability sport, similar to bocce that tests muscle control and accuracy. Players propel balls to land close to a target ball of which points are accumulated over the course of a match to find the winner.

The tournament consisted of two rounds with a lunch break in between and an awards ceremony after to celebrate the achievements of the students. The students were split in to three teams; Grantham College, Stamford College and a mix of both colleges. The Grantham College team were in high spirits as they were supported by their fellow classmates and came at a well-deserved second place.

Students from HNC/HND Sports Coaching course were also present at the tournament as they helped set up, officiated the matches, recorded the scores and took some photos.

“The students who helped out did a fantastic job and made sure that the event ran very smoothly; a big thank you from me for all their hard work,” said Lynsey Coy, Grantham College’s Activity Development Officer.

Sam Perks who is the Disability Development Officer from AoC Sport also attended to support the event. AoC Sport is a membership organisation who leads the development of sport and physical activity in education.

“Our aim is to help support colleges around the country in sport and physical activities; of which I am very happy to be here at the Boccia Tournament at Grantham College. The event has been a great opportunity for students to get active, interact with other students and is a great experience for colleges to work together. It has also been amazing to see students from other courses get involved and help run the event,” said Sam.

This is one of the many exciting events that our LDC students have been part of. Past events include fitness sessions at Anytime Fitness, a visit to Grantham Fire Brigade, a visit from Santa’s reindeers, end of year prom and much more.
