Returning to education as an adult can feel like a big step, but for many people across Grantham and the surrounding area, it is the start of an exciting new chapter.
Whether you’re looking to gain new skills, progress in your current role, change career, or simply build confidence, Grantham College offers courses to support learners at every stage of life.
Adult learners at the College study a wide range of subjects, including English, maths, art, business, construction, engineering, teaching, catering and more. Many balance their studies alongside work and family commitments, proving that learning can fit around modern life.
For some, returning to education is about improving career prospects. For others, it is about achieving a personal goal, meeting new people, or gaining qualifications they may have missed earlier in life. Whatever the motivation, adult learning can open doors to new opportunities and increased confidence.
The College also offers a variety of short courses designed to help people discover a new hobby, learn a practical skill, or get a taste of further study. Popular courses include bread making, plaster repair, plumbing, Christmas wreath making, photography, nail technology, and yoga, with something to suit a wide range of interests.
Many courses are available free of charge through funding opportunities, while others are available at a low cost, making education more accessible to adult learners. Some courses start from as little as £25 for a 10-week programme, and all online learning courses are currently free.
We spoke to some of our adult learners about their experiences, what inspired them to return to education, and how studying at Grantham College is helping them work towards their future ambitions.
One learner, who returned to education to take part in several short courses, shared:
“The adult education provision at Grantham College is excellent. It has provided me with opportunities to acquire a number of new skills, some of which I am already taking further. It is also good to keep your mind active and to get out of your comfort zone. In short, I have enjoyed being a learner and the sense of achievement that comes with trying and succeeding in a new area. Whilst I was not concerned about my mental health, it has certainly had a positive impact.”
Another adult learner shared:
“Having left school many years ago with a really bad GCSE grade, maths scared me because I didn’t feel very good at it. I started Functional Maths at Grantham College and I now feel able to tackle a maths problem with confidence. I even measured a room for flooring and I would never have been able to do this before!”
Other learners praised the accessibility and affordability of adult education, describing it as:
“It’s great to be able to have a go at something new without it costing a lot.”
Another learner, who enrolled on an Art Creative Craft course, said:
“Having never undertaken any type of Art & Design course, I didn’t really know what to expect, but wow, it exceeded my expectations! It was very inclusive for someone who had never undertaken this type of study before and incredibly inspirational, informative and motivational. I now fully intend to progress my learning and feel equipped to explore ceramic art independently too.”
These stories show that adult learning is about much more than gaining a qualification. It can help build confidence, develop new skills, support wellbeing, and open doors to opportunities that may once have seemed out of reach.
Anyone interested in exploring their options can attend Grantham College’s upcoming Open Event on Thursday 26thNovember, from 5:30 to 7:30pm, where visitors can meet tutors, discuss career goals, learn about funding opportunities and explore the range of adult learning courses available.
