🌟 Apprentice Success Story: Meet Heidi 🌟
11 February 2026At Grantham College, we are proud to collaborate with Anglian Water to deliver high‑quality training that supports the development of their future workforce. Heidi is one of the talented apprentices currently completing the Level 3 Engineering Technician (MOET) Apprenticeship with us, building the skills and confidence she needs to thrive in her engineering career.
Heidi returned to education after 30 years of working across a wide range of roles, including as a SEN Teaching Assistant in a secondary school, retraining in beauty therapy, working as a nanny, an au pair and even spending time in New Zealand. Reflecting on her journey, Heidi shared, “I never had a qualification or recognised skill to show for the jobs I was doing and wanted to challenge myself.”
After researching apprenticeship options for her own children, who are also currently completing apprenticeships, Heidi came across the Anglian Water programmes and felt encouraged by her family to apply. She explained, “At first it was daunting to return as a mature student, and having always had jobs that worked around childcare, it has been a big change, but it’s worth it.”
Heidi has particularly enjoyed developing her practical skills in class, highlighting the electrical units and workshop sessions as a standout part of her training. She explained, “I’ve really enjoyed the electrical units and the workshop sessions. Using the lathes and putting the theory into practice has helped everything click into place.”
She added, “The support from staff has been great, everyone has helped.” Heidi also highlighted the guidance she has received from her Business Advisor and her Early Careers Partner, describing them as kind, supportive, and always willing to help. She shared that the team at Anglian Water has been equally welcoming, explaining that being paired with an experienced colleague on site has made a real difference to her confidence and understanding of day‑to‑day operations.
When asked what advice she would give to others considering an apprenticeship, she said, “Do it! Put your all into it and take every opportunity you can get involved in. Make the most of your apprenticeship.”
Her Electrical Installation lecturer, Andrew shared:Â “Heidi has settled exceptionally well into the programme. She is a committed and conscientious learner who consistently goes the extra mile, particularly when tackling new or challenging concepts. Heidi is not afraid to ask questions, actively seeks feedback, and shows real determination to fully understand both the theory and the practical application of electrical principles. As a more mature student, she brings a strong work ethic, professionalism, and a positive attitude to the cohort, and she is a pleasure to teach.”
Once Heidi completes her apprenticeship, she will progress into a role with Anglian Water as an Asset Maintenance Technician in Clean Water, working either as an Electrician or Mechanic depending on the needs of the business.
