Edexcel BTEC HNC Animal Management (Level 4)
This one year course is designed for students wanting to work within the animal sector. It develops knowledge and understanding of the industry and individual animals and skills in areas such as animal health and welfare.
For students who have recently been in education, the entry profile is likely to include one of the following:
- BTEC Level 3 qualification in Animal Care.
- GCE Advanced Level profile that demonstrates strong performance in a relevant subject or adequate performance in more than one GCE subject.
- Other related Level 3 qualifications.
- Access to Higher Education Diploma awarded by an approved further education institution.
- Related work experience.
- An international equivalent of the above. For students who have recently been in education, the entry profile is likely to include one of the following:
- a BTEC Level 3 qualification in Animal Care or Animal Management
- a GCE Advanced Level profile that demonstrates strong performance in a relevant subject or adequate performance in more than one GCE subject
- other related Level 3 qualifications

- an international equivalent of the above.
At Level 4 students develop a broad knowledge and awareness of key aspects of Animal Management which includes one unit assessed by a Pearson-set assignment. .
The units delivered are:
Unit 1 – animal health & welfare
Unit 2 – business and business environment
Unit 3 – managing a successful project
Unit 4 – animal behaviour
Unit 6 – anatomy and physiology
Unit 8 – ecological principles
Unit 15 – animal collection management including practical sessions on the animal care unit
Unit 53 – British wildlife
Each unit is worth 15 credit, at level 4. To complete the HNC qualification to a minimum pass grade a student must have :-
• Completed units equivalent to 120 credits at level 4,
• Achieved at least a pass in 105 credits at level 4. Delivery of the HNC will take place via formal lectures, and practical workshop \ tutorials. Related course materials are available on the colleges Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) pages. The course is taught for ten hours per week and for each hour within the classroom at least one hour will be required of self-study.
Assessment for this qualification is carried out through written assignments and practical assessments and includes presentations, time based assessments (tests) and weekly record of progression ‘diary’ (log book).
There is a mixture of specialist staff delivering the course, with varying industrial, academic and teaching experience. All staff have higher levels qualifications in their field of expertise.
Students who complete a BTEC Higher National in Animal Management may find work as an:
- Animal Keeper
- Animal Controls Officer
- Animal Health Officer
- Animal Trainer
- Wildlife Technician Or may progress to HND in Animal Management.
