The course is available to anyone who has an interest in vehicle maintenance or wishes to have a career within the automotive industry.
The course will develop basic knowledge and skills in motor vehicle systems. Learners will acquire the basic skills and understanding needed to be able to carry out basic routine maintenance. The leaners will have hands on opportunities to extend their own personal skills in relation to vehicle maintenance.
This qualification allows learners to learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment and/or career progression in the automotive industry
There are no stipulated entry requirements for this qualification, but there must be a minimum of 3 GCSE’s at grade 3 or above.
The course is designed with both mandatory and optional units. The mandatory units are:
Unit 001 - Skills in Health, Safety and Good Housekeeping in the Automotive Environment
Unit 031 - Skills to Support Working Relationships in the Automotive Work Environment
Unit 051 - Knowledge of Health, Safety and Good Housekeeping in the Automotive Environment
Unit 081 - Knowledge to Support Working Relationships in the Automotive Work Environment
Unit 726/776 - Introduction to Automotive Technology and Workshop Skills
Unit 727/ 777 - Carry out Basic Routine Vehicle Maintenance
Unit 601 - Knowledge of Carrying Out Non-High Voltage Operations On, Near or With an Electric Vehicle
Plus 2 optional units:
Unit 501 - Skills in Inspection, Repair and Replacement of Standard Light Vehicle Tyres
Unit 551 - Knowledge in Inspection, Repair and Replacement of Standard Light Vehicle Tyres
The assessments will consist of the following – online multi choice tests; practical observations and reports relating to the completion of practical tasks
Full Time Further Education courses are free to school leavers and those who are under 19 on 31 August of the year they start their course. Exam resit fees may apply as applicable.

Students that are unemployed and currently seeking work, or on a low income of up to £25,750 per annum may be able to enrol to a course at Level 2 or below free of charge. During the course the following personal protective equipment will be required – steel toe capped boots, overalls and safety glasses
Upon successful completion of the qualification, learners will be equipped with the knowledge and skills required for progression onto an automotive apprenticeship or progression on the following City & Guilds qualification:
