VTCT NVQ Diploma Hair (Full Level 2)

Overview

The VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Women’s Hairdressing is designed for learners aged 16-18 and 19+ in full-time education who want to pursue a career as a hairdresser/stylist.

Am I Ready?

Completion of Level 1 Hairdressing or equivalent. You also need 2 GCSEs at grade F/2 or above.

If you are under 19 and do not hold a GCSE grade C or higher in English and Maths, it is mandatory to work towards these qualifications while studying for your hairdressing diploma. This will require attendance of 1 hour 30 minutes per week for each Functional Skills subject, or 3 hours per week for each GCSE, if needed. Additionally, you will complete 30 hours of work experience.

Course Details

This qualification is based on the national occupational standards for hairdressing and covers all the essential skills required to work effectively as a hairdresser/stylist. As part of your course, you will study:

  • Health & Safety in the Salon
  • Working in the Hair Industry
  • Client Consultation
  • Shampoo & Condition
  • Cut Women’s Hair
  • Colour & Lighten Hair
  • The Art of Dressing Hair

In addition to the mandatory units, you will be required to complete optional units, which may include:

  • Promote a Product or Service
  • Display Stock to Promote Sales in a Salon
  • Salon Reception Duties
  • Perm and Neutralise Hai
Assessment

The assessment for this qualification includes:

  • Seven online multiple-choice exams (externally set and marked)
  • Ongoing practical assessments (externally set, internally marked)
  • Subject-related oral questions
  • Two assignments (internally marked)
  • A portfolio of evidence (internally set and marked), which includes eleven individual workbooks covering various hairdressing topics.
Fees & Funding

Sixteen / Eighteen

Full Time Further Education courses are free to school leavers and those who are under 19 on 31 August of the year they start their course. Exam resit fees may apply as applicable.

Level 2 / Level 3

Students enrolling onto their first full Level 2 or Level 3 course or below who are aged between 19 and 23 may be able to enrol for free. This is a government initiative and the course offer is subject to change. Grantham College reserves the right to offer a substitute course if the qualification advertised is not funded by the government. This does not affect your rights under Consumer Law.

Low Income / Unemployed Seeking Work

Students that are unemployed and currently seeking work, or on a low income of up to £25,750 per annum may be able to enrol to a course at Level 2 or below free of charge. This is a government initiative and the course offer is subject to change. Grantham College reserves the right to offer a substitute course if the qualification advertised is not funded by the government. This does not affect your rights under Consumer Law.

Additional Information

As part of the course, you’ll also have the opportunity to go on exciting trips and take part in a variety of enrichment activities at Grantham College.

You’ll also have to complete 30 hours of work experience— building valuable skills and a strong portfolio.

Kit and Uniform - You will need to purchase a kit and uniform before the start of the programme.

Your Next Steps

This course focuses on developing both the principles and practical skills needed in the hairdressing industry. It is designed to provide the occupational capability required for employment as a stylist. While the main goal of this qualification is to prepare learners for work, you may choose to further your knowledge and skills by progressing onto the VTCT Level 3 Technical Level or the Extended Diploma in Hairdressing, or even the Level 2 Certificate in Barbering.
