VTCT Diploma Hairdressing (Level 1)

The VTCT Level 1 Diploma in Hairdressing is designed for learners aged 16-18 and 19+ who are in full-time education and wish to develop their hairdressing skills. This qualification provides a solid foundation for further learning and prepares you to progress to the next level of vocational learning at Level 2.

2 GCSE’s grade F/2 or above.

If you're under 19 and do not hold a GCSE grade C or higher in English and Maths, it’s compulsory for you to work towards these qualifications while studying for your hairdressing diploma. You will complete Functional Skills English and/or Maths for 1 hour 30 minutes, or GCSE English and/or Maths for 3 hours.

This qualification is based on the national occupational standards for hairdressing and covers all the essential skills needed to work effectively as a salon junior. Learners must complete all mandatory units, which include:

• Health and Safety in the Salon
• Introduction to the Hair and Beauty Sector
• Working with Others in the Hair and Beauty Sector
• Presenting a Professional Image in a Salon
• Shampoo and Conditioning
• Colour Hair Using Temporary Colour
• Styling Women’s Hair
• The Art of Dressing Hair
• Create a Hair and Beauty Image
• Salon Reception Duties
• Create and Maintain Retail Displays

In addition to the mandatory units, learners must choose two optional units, which may include:

• Hair Plaiting
• Styling Men’s Hair

This qualification provides a comprehensive foundation to start your career in the hairdressing industry.

The assessment includes:

• Three online multiple-choice exams (externally set and marked)
• Ongoing practical assessments (externally set, internally marked)
• Subject-related oral questions
• One internally marked assignment
• A portfolio of evidence (internally set and marked)
• 13 workbooks (internally marked)

You are also required to complete 30 hours of work experience.

Sixteen / Eighteen

Full Time Further Education courses are free to school leavers and those who are under 19 on 31 August of the year they start their course. Exam resit fees may apply as applicable.

Grantham College reserves the right to offer a substitute course if the qualification advertised is not funded by the government.

Low Income / Unemployed Seeking Work

Students that are unemployed and currently seeking work, or on a low income of up to £25,750 per annum may be able to enrol to a course at Level 2 or below free of charge. This is a government initiative and the course offer is subject to change. Grantham College reserves the right to offer a substitute course if the qualification advertised is not funded by the government. This does not affect your rights under Consumer Law.

As part of the course, you’ll also have the opportunity to go on exciting trips and take part in a variety of enrichment activities at Grantham College.

You’ll also have to complete 30 hours of work experience— building valuable skills and a strong portfolio.

Kit and Uniform - You will need to purchase a kit and uniform before the start of the programme.

Upon completing this course, you’ll have the opportunity to progress to the Level 2 Hairdressing courses, further enhancing your skills and career prospects in the hair industy.
