NCFE Award Creative Crafts (Level 1) - Textiles Pathway

Overview

This course is ideal for anyone aged 19 and above who wants to develop new craft skills in textiles or broaden their understanding of creative crafts.

Throughout the course, you’ll build practical textile skills using a range of materials, tools, and techniques, while also learning how to plan and develop your ideas.

Am I Ready?

There are no specific prior qualifications, learning or experience required for this qualification. However, learners will need basic literacy : i.e. the ability to read and interpret written tasks and to write answers in a legible and understandable form in the English language.

You’re curious about textiles and want to try fabric manipulation, sewing, and other hands‑on creative techniques.
You enjoy working with materials and want to learn basic skills like stitching, appliqué, fabric printing, or adding decorative details.

You want a flexible, creative course that lets you experiment, express yourself, and develop your own ideas through textile projects.
You’d like to earn a recognised qualification that shows you can plan, create, and evaluate textile work with purpose and creativity.

What You’ll Learn

Develop foundational textile skills through practical, hands‑on projects using a range of materials, tools, and techniques.
Create and plan ideas for simple textile outcomes such as cushions, tote bags, or wall hangings.
Use key textile techniques safely and effectively, including hand stitching, machine sewing, fabric painting, and appliqué.
Work creatively and with care, exploring your personal style while experimenting with colours, textures, and patterns.
Research, develop and evaluate you progress through your own sketch book.
Create a final outcome for the End of Year Show.

Assessment

You will receive feedback from your tutor throughout the course. This will help you understand your progress and the areas you can improve.

Learning will take place through group discussions, one‑to‑one tutorials, and set tasks.

You will also keep a sketchbook during the course. This is where you will record your research, ideas, and notes from both your practical and theory work. It will become a record of your learning and development.

Fees & Funding

Low Income / Unemployed Seeking Work

Students that are unemployed and currently seeking work, or on a low income of up to £25,750 per annum may be able to enrol to a course at Level 2 or below free of charge. This is a government initiative and the course offer is subject to change. Grantham College reserves the right to offer a substitute course if the qualification advertised is not funded by the government. This does not affect your rights under Consumer Law.

Additional Information

You will need a sketchbook for your theory work and a notebook to take notes during class. You may also choose to buy some of your own materials to help develop your ideas, but this is optional.

You will exhibit your work in the ‘end of year exhibition’ creating a finished textile piece to be proud of - By the end of the course, you’ll have created a personal piece of textile craft and built practical skills to use in future creative work.

Your Next Steps

On successful completion of this course you could progress on to Level 2 BTEC or higher education Art and Design Courses. There are other art courses on offer at College along with short courses in different subjects that may be of interest to you.
