A minimum of one year’s practical experience in an employed or voluntary capacity with a written statement of support from the head teacher/manager. Candidates should ideally hold a Diploma, NVQ or Access to HE qualification and a minimum of a Level 2 in English and maths although other qualifications will be considered and enthusiasm and experience are essential. Candidates should also hold or be willing to apply for a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate. Applicants must have access to a voluntary or paid role in a relevant setting for at least 12 hours a week throughout the course and have written support from the setting.
Have you ever thought about working towards a degree, but decided against it as you are already in employment or volunteering and don’t want to give that up? Our FdA Education in Practice course is designed for you if you are working and supporting children in primary, secondary, special schools or learners in a further education college.
This work-based Foundation Degree programme is a combination of practice-based learning and college-based teaching sessions that take place once a week, allowing you to continue working or volunteering throughout the course. Throughout the two-year programme, you will integrate your previous experience of working with children into your studies. The degree is designed to improve and develop your personal and professional communication skills, allowing you to professionalise your approach and further your personal growth.
You will work with experienced academic staff and be supported through peer-led groups, directed tasks and interactive web-based resources. A variety of assessment methods are used including presentations, discussions, written assignments such as essays and reports and portfolios of work focused learning. All assessments allow you to reflect on your practice and theory as you evidence your learning.
Graduate opportunities have enabled our students to attain managerial positions within their sector, to lead practice with their setting. Many go on to further study to become teachers through our PGCE routes, or gain a professional status. Others take on professional roles in areas such as special educational needs, mentoring, subject support, school, family and welfare liaison roles in the wider educational community and with local authorities working with the full range of age groups and sectors.
Assessment is through a variety of methods including essays, presentations, journals and portfolios depending on the module content. Access to practical experience of teaching/supporting learners is required and observations will be carried out on a regular basis.
This Foundation Degree is often seen as a step towards becoming a teacher, or to progression in your current role by extending your opportunities within the education sector.
Staff profile: Emma Marshall. Emma has been involved in education for over 25 years. Following her first-degree BA (Hons) in geography from University of Birmingham, Emma did her PGCE with the University of Lancaster and worked as a teacher in Foundation stage and key stage 1 classrooms across Lincolnshire, she was also SENCO in two different Primary Schools. She then took a sideways step and took a role as Deputy Head of a large Montessori Nursery school. During that time she developed her passion for outdoor learning becoming an accredited Forest School Leader. Emma has worked for the past 5 years at Grantham College teaching on the Lincoln Bishop University Foundation Degrees and in the past 18 months has taken on the role of course leader. She has recently completed her MA in Professional Studies at Lincoln Bishop University.
On successful completion of this course you may be able to progress on to a BA (Hons) Degree.
