T Levels are the technical option for young people aged 16-19. The T-Level provides the knowledge and practical experience needed to pursue a skilled profession within engineering. The qualification has been designed in partnership with business and will give employers the skills they need.
The qualification is split between two components, the core component, and the occupational specialism component. The core component is designed to offer breadth of knowledge and skills which act as the building blocks to understand the industry and different roles. The Occupational Specialisms develops the knowledge, skills, and behaviours necessary to ensure competence in an occupation role. The qualification also requires the completion of an industrial placement within the engineering sector for a minimum of 45 days.
The pathway offered for the occupational specialism:
1. Maintenance engineering technologies: Electrical and Electronic
5 GCSE’s (Grade 4 or C) including English, Mathematics and Science, which should be at grade 5 or above.
The following core components will be covered within the first year of the T-Level:
1 Working within the engineering and manufacturing sectors
2 Engineering and manufacturing past, present, and future
3 Engineering representations
4 Essential mathematics for engineering and manufacturing
5 Essential science for engineering and manufacturing
6 Materials and their properties
7 Mechanical principles
8 Electrical and electronic principles
9 Mechatronics
10 Engineering and manufacturing control systems
11 Quality management
12 Health and safety principles and coverage
13 Business, commercial and financial awareness
14 Professional responsibilities, attitudes, and behaviours
15 Stock and asset management
16 Continuous improvement
17 Project and programme management
Within the Occupational Specialism, the following will be covered within the second year of the T-Level:
Maintenance engineering technologies: Electrical and Electronic:
The purpose of this specialism is to understand electrical and electronic components and systems, and undertake key procedures for maintenance, installation, and repair. Through the development of knowledge and understanding of, and skills in:
Within year 1, the course will be assessed through two externally set exams covering knowledge from the engineering common core component and the Employer set project.
The two external exams will cover the core component and consist of a mixture of short answer questions and extended response questions. The engineering common core is graded overall A*–E plus ungraded (U).
The Employer-set project will consist of a well-defined, real industry-style brief. The brief will be complex and will require the use of relevant Maths, English and digital skills. The brief will provide a valid context which will demonstrate the knowledge and understanding of the core content and their core skills to solve occupationally relevant situations and/or problems.
The year 2 assessment will focus on the occupational specialism. The assessments will feature a practical element and composed of a series of practical tasks relating to the chosen specialism. The assessments will be reliant on internal assessor observation notes and records. The Occupational Specialism are graded overall Distinction, Merit, Pass and Ungraded. Each Occupational Specialism achieved will receive a grade.
Full Time Further Education courses are free to school leavers and those who are under 19 on 31 August of the year they start their course. Exam resit fees may apply as applicable.
Grantham College reserves the right to offer a substitute course if the qualification advertised is not funded by the government.
* Courses listed as free under the course details are free (material costs may apply as shown in the additional information section).
During the course the following personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required – steel toe capped boots, overalls, safety glasses and ear defenders.
On successful completion of the Level 3 T-Level there is the opportunity to progress to higher education or employment within a variety of engineering sectors or apprenticeships within the engineering industry.
