C&G 7290-12 Diploma Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles (Full Level 2)
The course is available to anyone who has an interest in vehicle maintenance or wishes to have a career within the automotive industry, who have a level 1 automotive qualification.
The qualifications are aimed at learners aged 16+ who would like to develop practical skills and understanding in motor vehicle systems. Learners will acquire the key skills and understanding to apply for an automotive apprenticeship or continue onto the level 3 qualification.
These qualifications allow learners to learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment and/or career progression in the automotive industry.
The completion of the Level 1 Diploma in Vehicle Maintenance is required for this qualification. Or a minimum of 2 years automotive industry experience.
The course is designed with both mandatory and optional units.
The mandatory units are:
- Unit 001 - Skills in Health, Safety and Good Housekeeping in the Automotive Environment
- Unit 003 - Skills in Supporting Job Roles in the Automotive Work Environment
- Unit 004 - Skills in Materials, Fabrication, Tools and Measuring Devices in the Automotive Environment
- Unit 051 - Knowledge of Health, Safety and Good Housekeeping in the Automotive Environment
- Unit 053 - Knowledge of Support for Job Roles in the Automotive Work Environment
- Unit 054 - Knowledge of Materials, Fabrication, Tools and Measuring Devices Used in the Automotive Environment
- Unit 101 - Skills in Routine Light Vehicle Maintenance
- Unit 102 – Skills in Removing and Replacing Light Vehicle Combustion Engine Units and Components
- Unit 103 – Skills in Removing and Replacing Light Vehicle Electrical Units and Components
- Unit 104 – Skills in Removing and Replacing Light Vehicle Chassis Units and Components
- Unit 151 – Knowledge of Routine Light Vehicle Maintenance
- Unit 152 – Knowledge of Light Vehicle Combustion Engine Mechanical, Lubrication and Cooling System Units and Components
- Unit 153 – Knowledge of Removing and Replacing Light Vehicle Electrical Units and Components
- Unit 154 – Knowledge of Removing and Replacing Light Vehicle Chassis Units and Components
- Unit 162 – Knowledge of Light Vehicle Transmission and Driveline Units and Components
- Unit 172 – Knowledge of Light Vehicle Fuel, Ignition, Air and Exhaust System Units and Components
- Unit 601 - Knowledge of Carrying Out Non-High Voltage Operations On, Near or With an Electric Vehicle
Plus 2 optional units:
- Unit 105 - Skills in Inspecting Light Vehicles Using Prescribed Methods
- Unit 155 - Knowledge of Inspecting Light Vehicles Using Prescribed Methods
The assessments will consist of the following – online multi choice tests; practical observations and reports relating to the completion of practical tasks.
Sixteen / Eighteen
Full Time Further Education courses are free to school leavers and those who are under 19 on 31 August of the year they start their course. Exam resit fees may apply as applicable.

Level 2 / Level 3
Students enrolling onto their first full Level 2 or Level 3 course or below who are aged between 19 and 23 may be able to enrol for free. This is a government initiative and the course offer is subject to change. Low Income / Unemployed Seeking Work
Students that are unemployed and currently seeking work, or on a low income of up to £25,750 per annum may be able to enrol to a course at Level 2 or below free of charge. This is a government initiative and the course offer is subject to change. During the course the following personal protective equipment will be required – steel toe capped boots, overalls and safety glasses.
Upon successful completion of the qualification, learners will be equipped with the knowledge and skills required for progression onto an automotive apprenticeship or progression on the following City & Guilds qualification:
