What is Erasmus+?
Erasmus+ is the EU’s programme to support education, training, youth and sport in Europe.
It is open to education, training, youth and sport organisations across all sectors of lifelong learning, including school education, further and higher education, adult education and the youth sector. It offers exciting opportunities for UK participants to then study, work, volunteer, teach and train abroad in Europe.
Benefits of taking part in the Erasmus+ programme:
- Increased personal and professional development;
- Increased skills and employability;
- Broaden cultural horizons;
- Boost confidence;
- Develop language skills;
- Provides an excellent addition to student CVs.
Each year Grantham College applies for funding to enable students to spend two weeks in a European country on work experience gaining new skills and cultural knowledge. This is the eleventh year that we have taken part in the programme. Previously students from Business, Sport, Travel & Tourism, Hospitality & Catering, Engineering, Media and Health & Social Care have travelled to Hungary, Italy, Spain, Germany, Tenerife, Sweden and Malta.
What the programme provides:
The programme pays for travel, insurance, accommodation and subsistence costs for students participating in the programme. There will also be an opportunity to participate in cultural visits. The College will require a £50 deposit from all students chosen and accepted to take part in the programme. This is fully refundable once students have returned from their trip/completed their work experience placement.
Students may want/need to take additional spending money and this will be discussed further once we know the total costs involved in the programme and the amount of subsistence that remains available.
What happens next?
During induction in September, a member of staff responsible for the Erasmus+ programme will come and speak to students about the programme in more detail. Students who are interested in participating in European work experience abroad will be required to submit a CV and covering letter and attend a selection interview. There will be a requirement to attend language lessons and students must ensure that they remain up to date with their course work.
