Graphic Design Students Create a New Image for Local Company Thorns Farm Leisure

Thorns Farm Leisure first opened its doors to guests in 2009 and within a few years it became clear to the owners that their unique set up was popular with people who work in Grantham during the week and therefore in need of a “home from home”.

With the success the owners saw they decided to converted a second barn in 2012 into 2 further self-contained B&B apartments – this time an old cart shed. With the success of the second building they are now in the process of building three larger units, they are all based on the same principle as the previous ones but they will be larger and more luxurious.

Grethe Andersen, from Thorns Farm said ‘We felt with the expansion of a third barn it was time to update our identity. I therefore made contact with Dave Thomas from Grantham College who is head of the Digital Design & Graphics department. The thought of giving the students a “real life” project appealed to me and it has been a lovely process working with them. Initially I went in to give them a briefing which was followed by a site visit from the students.’

The first task the students undertook was to create a new logo with each student creating a unique individual idea. As in any designer / client situation the preferred logos were worked on a little more and eventually a new logo has been chosen. After much thought the owners of Thorns Farm choose Bradley Thomas’ design as the winning logo.

The same group of students were then asked to work on a brochure that can be handed out to potential guests and local businesses who employ staff in need of Monday – Friday accommodation. Again the students worked within the brief given to them by Thorns Farm and ideas were developed with Callum Arthur’ design being chosen as the clients preferred brochure.

Grethe also commented ‘I would like to thank Dave Thomas and the students for working with Thorns Farm Leisure and I wish all the students the best with their future careers in design.’
