Precision Engineering in Action: MOET Apprentices Manufacture Aluminium Hammers & Steel Sliding Bevel Gauges at Grantham College

At Grantham College & University Centre, our MOET (Maintenance & Operations Engineering Technician) apprenticeship programme provides first-year apprentices with the technical expertise and hands-on experience required for careers in engineering maintenance, manufacturing, and mechanical operations.

As part of their practical training, apprentices recently undertook the machining and fabrication of aluminium hammers and steel sliding bevel gauges—two essential tools in precision engineering. This project allowed them to refine their machining accuracy, hand-skills, and ability to work to precise tolerances—key competencies in the engineering and manufacturing industries.

Developing Essential Engineering Skills

Our MOET apprentices, who train with leading companies such as National Grid, Anglian Water, Canal & River Trust, and Future Biogas, gained invaluable experience in:

  • Precision Machining & Turning Operations – For the aluminium hammers, apprentices worked on live lathes, turning components to specific tolerances, ensuring balance, durability, and a smooth professional finish. They also drilled and tapped hammer handles, preparing them for secure mechanical assembly.
  • Manufacturing Steel Sliding Bevel Gauges – Apprentices machined steel to precise dimensions, ensuring each bevel gauge was accurate, adjustable, and suitable for precision measurement applications. They applied milling, drilling, and fine finishing techniques to meet industry standards.
  • Hand-Skills & Finishing Techniques – Using hand files, hacksaws, and polishing tools, apprentices ensured that both the hammer and bevel gauge components were free from defects, smooth to touch, and met exact engineering specifications.
  • Assembly & Quality Control – Apprentices practiced mechanical assembly, verifying that their components were accurately machined, correctly aligned, and fully functional, reinforcing key workmanship and measurement principles.
  • Workshop Health & Safety – With a strong emphasis on risk assessment, machine safety, and correct use of PPE, apprentices followed industry best practices while operating live machinery, hand tools, and precision measuring instruments.

Preparing Apprentices for Industry Success

This hands-on project is a fundamental part of MOET apprenticeship training, ensuring that first-year apprentices develop core practical skills required in engineering roles across multiple industries. At Grantham College & University Centre, we work closely with employers to ensure apprentices graduate with industry-ready competencies that meet the demands of mechanical maintenance, power generation, and industrial operations.
