Interview with an Apprentice: The Journey to a Career in Renewables!

We recently had the opportunity to sit down with one of our apprentices, who has been making great strides in the renewable energy industry.

Billy is currently working towards his Level 3 Plumbing and Heating Apprenticeship Standard at Grantham College, while gaining hands-on experience with TF Heating & Plumbing Ltd. Billy has also been an integral part of the exciting project of setting up our fully functioning eco-house, putting his skills to the test in a real-world setting.

1. What made you choose the Plumbing and Heating apprenticeship?

“I was working for a company called Orangehouse Renewables when I first started. As I progressed, I realised that renewables are the future, and I wanted to pursue a career in that field. It felt like the right path to take, and I’ve never looked back since.”

2. How has this course helped you develop the skills you need for your future career?

“When I first started, I wasn’t much of a ‘handyman,’ but the on-the-job training has really benefited me. I’ve learned so much, not just in the classroom but through hands-on experience that’s been directly relevant to what I’ll be doing in my career.”

3. Can you share a memorable experience or hands-on project from the course?

“One of the most memorable projects was Installing water source heat pumps in the Project Fishery. It gave me real insight into how renewable energy solutions are integrated into practical applications.”

4. What support have you received from your lecturers or peers during your studies?

“David Bailey has been a huge support since my second year. He’s always seen potential in me, and his guidance has been key to my development. The first year was tough, though, as we didn’t have a consistent lecturer, which made things more challenging.”

5. What advice would you give to someone considering this course?

“I’d say stick with it, even if the first year is tough. There’s a lot of health & safety training, and the pay isn’t great initially, but it’s all worth it in the long run. The skills you gain and the career prospects are so much more rewarding once you get through that initial phase.”

6. What are you most excited about in your future career after completing this course?

“I’m really excited about the possibility of being my own boss. Working for myself and having the freedom to pursue my own projects is something I’m looking forward to. There’s so much potential in the renewable energy industry, and I can’t wait to see where this path takes me.”

The future is bright for this apprentice, and we’re excited to see what comes next in their journey.

If you’re thinking about a career in renewables, this could be the perfect path for you too!
