VTCT Diploma Hairdressing (Level 1)

Overview

The VTCT Level 1 Diploma in Hairdressing is aimed at 16-18 year old and 19+ learners in full – time education who wish to develop skills in hairdressing and will provide you with the foundation for further learning and to allow you to progress onto the next level of vocational learning at level 2. If you are aged under 19 and if you do not hold a GCSE grade C or higher in English and Maths, it is compulsory for you to work towards these qualifications whilst studying for your hairdressing qualification: you will study Functional Skills English and/or maths for 1 hour 30 minutes, or GCSE English and/or maths for 3 hours.

2 GCSE’s grade F/2 or above.

Course Details

This qualification is based on the national occupational standards for hairdressing and includes all the required elements to work effectively as a salon junior. Learners must achieve all mandatory units which include:

  • Health and safety in the salon
  • Introduction to the hair and beauty sector
  • Working with others in the hair and beauty sector
  • Presenting a professional image in a salon
  • Shampoo and conditioning
  • Colour hair using temporary colour
  • Styling women’s hair
  • The art of dressing hair
  • Create a hair and beauty image
  • Salon reception duties
  • Create and maintain retail displays

In addition to completing the mandatory units, learners are required to complete two optional units which could include:

  • Hair plaiting
  • Styling men’s hair
Assessment

Three online multiple choice examinations, externally set and externally marked. Practical continual assessments externally set and internally marked. Subject related oral questions. 1 assignment internally marked. Portfolio of evidence internally set and internally marked. 13 workbooks marked internally. You are required to undergo 30 hours of work experience.

Fees & Funding

Sixteen / Eighteen

Full Time Further Education courses are free to school leavers and those who are under 19 on 31 August of the year they start their course. Exam resit fees may apply as applicable.</p.

Grantham College reserves the right to offer a substitute course if the qualification advertised is not funded by the government.

Low Income / Unemployed Seeking Work

Students that are unemployed and currently seeking work, or on a low income of up to £20,319 per annum may be able to enrol to a course at Level 2 or below free of charge. This is a government initiative and the course offer is subject to change. Grantham College reserves the right to offer a substitute course if the qualification advertised is not funded by the government. This does not affect your rights under Consumer Law.

Your Next Steps

This qualification will prepare you to progress to the next level of vocational learning at level 2; specifically you will be able to undertake VTCT Level 2 in Women’s hairdressing.
