Pearson BTEC HND Film and Television (Level 5)

The Level 5 (HND) modules prepare students to move on to specific areas of film and television at Level 6 or to enter employment with the qualities and abilities necessary for roles that require personal responsibility and decision-making. Students will be able to develop and apply their own ideas to their studies, to deal with uncertainty and complexity, to explore solutions, demonstrate critical evaluation and use both theory and practice in a wide range of film and television situations.

Modules for HND include:

• A1 Concept & Development  

• A2 Creative project

The media department here at Grantham college has recently invested heavily in industry level equipment.

Including:

• 2 high end mac rooms
• High end Sound recording equipment.
• Sony FX6 and FX3 cameras
• Panasonic GH6 and GH5 full frame
• Black magic cinema cameras
• DJI drone
• DJI Ronin Gimbals
• A wide range of studio and on location lighting

As the course is only made up of the above 4 units across the 2 years the course content is very flexible and can be structured to meet the needs of the students that come on to the course.   The course is delviered at Grantham College by classroom based lectures over 10 hours a week with an expectation of 5-6 hours of self study.  

It is our goal to ensure that you undertake work experience as part of the course, although not mandatory from an examining board point of view, working on live briefs for clients will give you valuable work experience working on set as part of a team and will provide you with excellent content for showreels an portfolios as you move into industry or on to a top up degree.

64 UCAS points or above.

All of the above are mandatory units in which you must gain at least a passing grade in order to pass the course.

• Motion Graphics
• Audio for Film and Television

Throughout the course you will also have the opportunity to visit various UK film festivals, Work on live briefs for employers and develop your skill set on residential filming trips, which run twice yearly.

The course is coursework based.  You will need to ensure that all deadlines are met.

Assessment methods will depend upon the nature of the work, however written reports, presentations, explainer videos, finished edits from practical tasks, witness statements from your lecturers, audio files of you discussing your work with a member of the lecturing team.

All members of staff working within the department have relevant degrees in their associated fields, one is currently undertaking his masters in advanced editing.  Both members of staff have over 5 years of experience teaching HE media, with excellent success rates for our students. We strive to ensure that our students leave the course with a wide range of experiences and a secure foundation to move into industry.

By the end of Level 5 (HND), students will have a sound understanding of the principles in their area of specialist study and will know how to apply those principles more widely in the business world. They will be able to perform effectively in their specialist area.

Students who complete the course may choose to go on to top up to degree level at university or go directly into industry.
