NCFE Certificate Understanding Coding (Level 2)

Overview

This qualification is designed for learners who want to gain knowledge of coding. The qualification may also support progression into further study in coding or other topics within the digital sector.

The qualification is delivered using our online portal. You will need access to a computer, laptop, tablet or mobile phone to complete it.
Am I Ready?

There are no formal entry requirements however learners should be aged 19 or above at the start of the academic year to undertake this qualification.  Learners must be able to read and understand the learning resources and complete the written work with moderate assistance and will therefore benefit from having a reasonable understanding of reading and writing the English language. Please contact us if you require any further information.  Learners may find it helpful if they’ve already achieved a Level 1 Digital Skills or Information Technology related qualification.

Course Details

YOU CAN START THIS COURSE AT ANY TIME THROUGHOUT THE ACADEMIC YEAR BUT THERE IS AN EXPECTATION THAT YOU WILL COMPLETE WITHIN TWELVE WEEKS.  FAILURE TO COMPLETE THE COURSE WILL INCUR A £50 ADMINISTRATION CHARGE.

To be awarded this qualification, learners are required to successfully achieve 5 mandatory units:

  • Understand the principles of coding - Learners will gain knowledge of coding languages and the software development lifecycle. The learner will also learn about the job roles, functions and key skills requirements of a coding professional.
  • Understand terminology used in coding - The learner will understand basic computer terminology in relation to coding. They will also learn about coding acronyms, terminology and the key principles of writing code.
  • Understand coding design principles - The learner will gain knowledge of different coding types and the advantages and disadvantages of their use. The learner will also understand the use of pure functions.
  • Understand the processes and practice of coding - The learner will understand best practice in coding, methods of testing used and DevOps processes.
  • Understand the importance of communication and project management in coding - The learner will understand the importance of communication for those working in a coding environment. They will also learn about project management principles and Agile developments.
Assessment

This is a knowledge-based qualification, which is assessed via a portfolio of evidence.

Fees & Funding

Low Income / Unemployed Seeking Work

Students that are unemployed and currently seeking work, or on a low income of up to £20,319 per annum may be able to enrol to a course at Level 2 or below free of charge. This is a government initiative and the course offer is subject to change. Grantham College reserves the right to offer a substitute course if the qualification advertised is not funded by the government. This does not affect your rights under Consumer Law.

Learners who achieve this qualification could progress to:

• NCFE Level 3 Certificate in Coding Practices
• NCFE Level 3 Certificate or Diploma in IT User Skills
• Level 3 Certificate in Programming.
