Course Details

The Higher National Certificate (HNC) is the first year of the two year Diploma (HND) course and can be taken as a standalone qualification or as the first year of a two year programme. The aim of this course is to give you an overview into a range of new and traditional art and craft production processes. Through using an interdisciplinary approach you will explore a range of creative industries allowing you to either specialise or work across a variety of media. The practical element of this course will enable you to build a range of technical skills and teach you how to solve issues that may arise through practical exploration. You will be encouraged to question ‘function’ within an art and craft context and the perception that craft refers to skilled making and art may relate to the concept behind a piece of work. The process of idea development will underpin all aspects of the course. You will be shown a range of research methodologies, how to apply the research gathered, collaborative problem-solving, using feedback constructively and critical analysis to produce refined outcomes to the projects set. Contextual understanding and professional practice will reinforce all aspects of the course. As part of your programme of study you will have subject specific guest speakers, be required to participate in live projects and promotional events; this will help you to see your work in a true vocational context and prepare you for your next step once you have completed the course. Educational trips will be used to inspire and promote a broad cultural understanding along with essential links to the creative industries. First year modules include
• Art and Craft Production
• Media Practice
• Material Practices
• Professional Development

Assessment

Assessment is through continuous coursework, such as practical projects, visual and oral presentations and written assignments.

Staff profile: Anne-Marie Kerr | Artist, Designer & Educator "The best way for me to describe myself is as a designer who thrives on the creative process. My passion for making has been life long and extends across multiple 2D and 3D processes. "After gaining my degree in 3D Design specializing in Furniture Design and Manufacture, I was awarded an industrial placement through the Royal Society of Arts - Young Designers in Industry Scheme. This placement lead to me spending several years working in the design industry but a move to Lincolnshire enabled me to move into Design Education, something that I had always wanted to do. "For the past 20 years I have been working with and sharing my industry knowledge with students of all ages and abilities which is something that I regard as a privilege. "My understanding of the design industry has meant that I have been able to design a vocational style curriculum working with outside agencies such as the National Trust and Rosa Productions giving students opportunities beyond the normal teaching environment. These projects have meant that I have built contacts beyond the classroom and this is something that I want to explore more in the future."
