This course is suitable for learners who would like to work in Engineering. It provides some theoretical knowledge and basic practical skills in production or maintenance engineering. It allows learners to learn, develop and apply the knowledge and practical skills required for employment and/or career progression in the engineering sector. This qualification can help support you onto Level 2 PEO or towards an apprenticeship in Engineering.
3 x GCSE Grade D/3 or above and must include Science, Maths and English Language Grade 3/D or above.
This is a practical based course which will be based and taught in the Engineering workshop at the college. The course will include the following mandatory units: • Unit 201 Working safely in an engineering environment • Unit 202 Carrying out engineering activities efficiently and effectively • Unit 203 Using and communicating technical information In addition to this you will also study a range of optional units including: • Unit 205 Producing Components using Hand Fitting Techniques • Unit 211 Preparing and Using Lathes for Turning Operations • Unit 212 Preparing and Using Milling Machine There is also opportunity to study further PEO units to achieve the full qualification which are also relevant to the Engineering sector.
Learners will be supported within a sheltered environment to undertake the practical application of the theoretical knowledge for the associated units. Learners must have a completed portfolio of evidence for each unit which will be assessed within the college and include both knowledge and practical skills assessed by a qualified assessor.
Full Time Further Education courses are free to school leavers and those who are under 19 on 31 August of the year they start their course. Exam resit fees may apply as applicable.</p.

Learners will need to provide their own overalls and safety boots to BSE standard. One pair of safety glasses will be provided free of charge however you will need to purchase an additional pair if you lose or forget your glasses.
If you wear prescription glasses you will need to purchase your own prescription eye wear, however you may get support from student bursary with PPE (please enquire at the college)

This qualification would also support you to apply for an Engineering apprenticeship either in a manufacturing or mechanical field.
