BTEC National Extended Diploma Art and Design Practice Graphic Communication (Level 3)

Overview

This course will suit people who have a genuine interest in Design. You will have the opportunity to explore a broad range of processes and media within each discipline and build your Design skills and knowledge.

Course Details

The Level 3 Diploma Art & Design Practice (Graphic Communication) is the first year of the two year Level 3 Extended Diploma Art & Design Practice (Graphic Communication) course and can be taken as a standalone qualification or as the first year of a two year programme.

In year one, you will study: Exploring and Developing Design Skills – This is a variety of investigations within Graphic Communication, including research methods to inform ideas, problem solving skills, creative technical skills, professional skills and communication skills. This will also include projects and live client briefs that cover all the main areas of Graphic Communication including typography, logo design, magazine design, posters and practical skills on how to produce work digitally using Adobe software. In addition, you will have the opportunity to develop your photographic skills both in the studio and on location, both digitally and with film.

In year two learners will study: Advancing Creative Practice – personal investigation into creative careers, developing strategy for careers progression, preparation for University application and technical practice, developing communication skills to support progression and respond to a creative brief. In year two, you will also have the option of completing a Level 4 assessment unit: Critical Self-Appraisal.

The aim of this course is to give you a broad overview into a range of specialisms of Graphic Communication. Through using a multidisciplinary approach, you will explore a range of creative practices allowing you work across a variety of Graphic Design areas.

The practical element of this course will enable you to build a range of technical skills and teach you how to problem solve through exploring Graphic Communication practices, this will provide an insight on all the professional aspects of a career in Graphic Communication. You will be encouraged to develop your communication skills through working collaboratively and developing interpersonal and intrapersonal skills. As well as working on live client-based briefs.

Assessment

Practical and written assessments internally.

Fees & Funding

Sixteen / Eighteen

Full Time Further Education courses are free to school leavers and those who are under 19 on 31 August of the year they start their course. Exam resit fees may apply as applicable.</p.

Grantham College reserves the right to offer a substitute course if the qualification advertised is not funded by the government.

Adult Learning Loan

Advanced Learning Loan to help with college fees on applicable course. Students won’t have to pay anything back until the end of their course and are earning £27,295 per year. Household income isn’t taken into account and there’s no credit check. Eligibility is dependent on course, nationality, and age to meet the ESFA funding eligibility criteria.

Additional Information

Whilst on the Level 3 National Extended Diploma Art & Design Practice Graphic Communication course students will be able to work on Live project briefs for clients, take part in workshops with guest lecturers and complete thirty hours design work experience

Your Next Steps

This course will enable you to prepare a portfolio of design work and equip you with the necessary skills to operate at junior designer level. On successful completion of this course there is the opportunity to progress to the HNC/HND Graphic Design course here at Grantham College or on to another University or employment in your chosen field.
