Apprentice IMI Autocare Technician Standard (Level 2)

Overview

This course is suitable for learners who have an apprenticeship in a workplace environment such as a workplace garage. Learners will be employed and attend college 1 day per week for day release to develop their knowledge, competency, behaviours and skills.

Learners must have the support of their workplace and an appropriate mentor within the workplace who is able to evidence activities completed at work in order to successfully achieve this qualification.

Am I Ready?

Individual employers will set the selection criteria for the applicant. It is recommended during the selection process that the learner demonstrates the following qualities:
•Interested in the motor industry and vehicle repairs
•Have a good grasp of vehicle systems
•Problem solving and self-organisation skills
•Good communication skills, both oral and written
•Works well independently and as part of a team Learners must have successfully achieved and had certificated a Level 1 Automotive qualification. Learners must have also successfully achieved and had certificated English and Maths at Entry Level 3 or above and British Sign Language qualifications will be accepted as an alternative to English qualifications for whom this is their primary language Optional EU regulation requires that Apprentices hold or obtain the F-Gas qualification when involved in the installation, commissioning, service, maintenance and leak testing of stationary refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump equipment. This is optional for Autocare Technician Level 2 Apprentices.

Course Details

The Apprenticeship Standard for Autocare Technicians who carry out a range of services and require a unique combination of technical, retail and customer service skills. They will use a range of tools, measuring and diagnostic equipment to identify and repair simple system faults. The Autocare Technician has to demonstrate expertise not only in the technical elements of their role and have a good grasp of the practical and theoretical aspects of the vehicle systems they service, but also needs to have excellent telephone, customer handling (including how to handle difficult customers and deal with customer disappointment) and effective sales skills, also strong problem solving and self-organisation skills. They must be able to work as part of a team but also operate independently, understand how their employer operates from a commercial perspective and how their actions contribute to business results, whilst maintaining a high standard of workmanship. Phase 1=0-12 months (Gateway 1) of the course will include:
• Electric and Hybrid Awareness
• Wheels and Tyres
• Basic Breaking
• Basic Steering and Suspension
• Cooling, lubrication and filters
• Starting and Charging Phase 2=12-24 months (Gateway 2) of the course will include:
• Customer Service and Sales
• Stock Management
• Advanced Banking
• Advanced Steering and Suspension
• Exhaust and Emissions
• Air Conditioning
• Vehicle Inspection EPA Phase=24-30 months includes:
• EPA Gateway
• End Point Assessment You will also be required to complete an evidence log and off the job training log.

Assessment

As an apprentice you will be expected to progress through three gateways for the duration of your apprenticeship. These gateways confirm successful application of knowledge and skills required to support progression onto the next gateway and through to end point assessment. To successfully achieve this apprenticeship you will be assessed through the following ways:
• End Point Assessment Online Knowledge Tests (2 tests)
• End Point Assessment Practical Observations (5 tasks)
• Portfolio of evidence- The learner will be required to maintain a portfolio of evidence during their on-programme learning which should contain work they have completed from a wide range of activities and should include evidence.

Additional Information

Please note that this apprenticeship is only available of you are employed in an Automotive place of employment and able to demonstrate and perform consistently the requirements of this standard. You should have the support of your employer or a workplace mentor as they will be required to confirm your knowledge competency and skills.

Apprentices will be required to wear regulation British standard safety boots and overalls when in the college workshop and be equipped for classroom learning with stationary.

Your Next Steps

On completion of this standard the Auto-care Technician will be eligible to apply for IMI membership as a Registered Young Professional or if they wish an associate member. They would also gain entry onto the IMI Professional Register
