Those enrolled on apprenticeship programs are not eligible to apply for a bursary, however, there is financial support available to eligible apprentices who are care leavers or still in care and under the age of 25.
For an apprentice to be eligible for the care leavers’ bursary, they must meet all of the following:
You should be informed about the bursary before or during your initial assessment and you should declare your eligibility.
You must get written confirmation of your care leaver status from your local authority and pass it to Grantham College as the training provider. There is no specific format required for the confirmation – an email is acceptable. If required, Grantham College can assist you in obtaining this where necessary.
Please note that your employer may receive additional funding for you as a care leaver apprentice aged between 19 and 24 years old. This could alert your employer to your care leaver status. You should be made aware of this and asked whether you consent for your employer to know your care leaver status.
If you are eligible, payment is made by the Department of Education to Grantham College and this payment is then made directly to you as the apprentice.
The total bursary payment is £3,000 and paid in 3 instalments of £1,000 over the first year of the apprenticeship, providing you are still undertaking your apprenticeship at 60, 120 and 300 days after your start date.
