Renewable Energy Centre (REC)

A Success Story

In 2008 and again in 2009 the College secured funding from East Midlands Development Agency, managed by Pro-Enviro, to enable the purchase of renewable energy equipment to develop training facilities to demonstrate the use of environmental technologies.

The Concept

In 2009 The Construction Department obtained a 1980’s built mews property situated on the College campus. The idea was then formed that the renewable technologies purchased earlier could be installed in the house and the property converted to establish a training centre where existing College staff, learners, local companies and organisations that were interested in renewable and environmental technologies
could learn in a natural environment.

The Renovation

During the course of the conversion of the property, which was carried out by staff and students of the College, the following technologies were installed:

  • Air Source Heating
  • Ground Source Heating
  • Heat Recovery
  • Rainwater Harvesting
  • Photo-voltaic Energy
  • Solar Heating
  • Under Floor Heating.

The close collaboration with contractors and suppliers enabled the property to be converted and installations complete in order for training delivery to commence in November 2010.

Organisations involved in the project included:

  • British Eco
  • Geotherm
  • Ice Energy
  • ITHO
  • James Merrin Renewable Technology
  • Pro-Enviro/EMDA
  • Speedfit.
