1. Christmas wasn’t always on December 25

Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ but there is no mention of December 25th in the bible as most historians believe he was actually born in the spring. Some believe that the date was chosen because it coincided with the ancient pagan festival Saturnalia, which celebrated the agricultural god Saturn with partying, gambling, and gift-giving.

2. The Christmas tree was made famous by Prince Albert

Germans are thought to be the first to bring Christmas trees into their homes and decorate them during the holidays, but it only became a tradition when Prince Albert from Germany introduced it to his wife, Queen Victoria.

3. Santa Claus? – St Nick

Santa Claus comes from the Dutch words “Sinter Klass”, which is what they called their favourite saint, St Nicholas. He was renowned for his extreme kindness and generosity; often going out at night and taking presents to the needy

4. Coca-Cola came up with the red Santa suit

Santa Claus has worn many colours such as blue, white and green in the past however, his traditional red suit came from a 1930s ad by Coca Cola.

5. Why do we hang up stockings?

According to tradition, the original Saint Nicholas put gold coins in the stockings of three poor sisters. This led to the custom of children hanging stockings or putting out shoes, eagerly awaiting gifts from Saint Nicholas.
